We feel slightly bad that we wrote a post for the Edinburgh coffee lovers and not those further west. So, surprise surprise here it is: A definitive list of the best coffee shops in Glasgow. These are the places we just have to visit when we’re in the city, either for a quick caffeine fix or a great catch-up over a large cappuccino.
It may be just a tiny postage stamp on Gordon Street but Riverhill is our takeaway haven. Excellent coffee beside excellent sandwiches is always a winning combo and the lunchtime queue outside the door is a testament to this. They use coffee from Glasgow based roaster Dear Green which is good our taste buds as well as our inclinations to shop local. As well as this, it’s right next to Central Station, so you don’t need to settle for some pre-packed sandwich and vending machine brew every train journey.
Another advocate of Dear Green coffee, but with a more chic, Italian vibe is Labratorio Espresso on West Nile Street. As the name suggests, this place is the go-to for a top quality shot (of the non alcoholic kind). Their guest espresso blend changes every week, too, and isn’t variety the spice of life? There was no way we couldn’t mention their interior architecture, either. Reclaimed wood and sky-high ceilings are quite the spectacle while you sip. We certainly feel very upmarket drinking artisanal coffee in these sleek surroundings.
In case you hadn’t noticed we are bicycle lovers here at the Brotique. That coupled with our passion for great food and coffee makes Siempre an obvious choice. Have your bike serviced while you try their locally sourced coffee and organic meals. Even if you’re not based in the west end (The cafe is on Dumbarton Road) it’s worth peddling down of a weekend for the full experience.
Small batch roaster as well as a haunt for the java fanatics of Great Western Road, Papercup never fails to serve us an amazing beverage. They have a real commitment to their speciality blend as well as other top-quality beans, which really shows in the taste. Friendly staff and good prices (£1.80 for an americano) make the art of brewing accessible for anyone. Plus, if you fancy a hit of Papercup from your own home you can buy bags of their coffee from their website.
It may be another west end coffee shop but we just had to include Avenue G in our list. They use Monmouth Coffee for their espressos but it’s their baristas’ skill that adds that extra flourish. We also heard they’ll be roasting their own beans soon, so keep an eye out. Their tablet is incredible too if you like a bit of an indulgence. There’s two branches of Avenue G, one on Byres Road and the other on Great Western Road so you have double the excuse to sample their local product.
