Can I use hair conditioner on my beard?

You can, in a pinch. But here's why a beard-specific product does a better job.

We get asked this a lot, usually in the form of: why can't I just use the conditioner I already own? It is a fair question, and the honest answer is that you can in a pinch, but it is not built for the job.

Scalp conditioner is formulated for the hair on your head and the skin of your scalp, which behave differently from beard hair and facial skin. Facial skin is more sensitive and more prone to breakouts, and beard hair is coarser. A beard conditioner or softening balm is milder on the face and tuned to soften wiry hair without leaving residue or clogging pores.

So if you are caught short, a small amount of mild conditioner rinsed out well will not hurt. But for everyday use, a beard balm or beard conditioner plus your daily oil will give you a softer, healthier beard and happier skin. It is a small spend that pulls its weight.
