Why is my beard so itchy?

Beard itch is the number one reason men shave it off too early. Here's what causes it and how to stop it.

Beard itch is the single most common reason men give up in the first few weeks. The good news is that it is almost always fixable, and rarely about the beard itself.

Two things cause most of it. First, freshly cut hairs have sharp ends that scratch the skin as they grow, which is why a clean shave often itches more than letting it grow out. Second, and more often, the skin underneath has dried out. As a beard fills in it shields the skin and the skin makes less of its own oil, so it gets tight, flaky and itchy.

The fix is simple: stop stripping the skin and start moisturising it. Swap shampoo and face wash for a dedicated beard wash, used only a few times a week, and apply a few drops of beard oil daily, worked right down to the skin. Most men feel the difference within days.

If the itch comes with redness, spots or persistent flaking, an oil with tea tree can help, and it is worth seeing a pharmacist or GP if it does not settle. But for the everyday itch of a growing beard, oil is the answer. Push through the first fortnight and it passes.

How long does beard itch last?

For most men the worst of it is the first two to four weeks, while the beard is short and the cut ends are sharp. Keep the skin oiled and it settles as the hair grows past that stage. If it is still bad after a month, it is more likely dry or irritated skin than the beard itself.

Does beard oil actually stop the itch?

Usually, yes, because most beard itch is dry skin and oil is what puts the moisture back. Work a few drops into the skin under the beard, not just the hair. If the itch comes with redness or flaking, an oil with tea tree can help calm it.
