Can you use scalp conditioner on your beard?

A fair question we get all the time. The short answer is yes, but — here's what beard-specific products actually do differently.

It is one of our favourite questions, because it is such a sensible one: why can't I just use the scalp conditioner I already own, instead of buying a separate bottle of beard softener? You can, in a pinch. But there are good reasons the beard-specific version exists.

Scalp conditioner is designed for the hair and skin on top of your head. Facial skin is more sensitive and more prone to spots, and beard hair is coarser and wirier than scalp hair. A beard softener or balm is milder on the face and tuned to soften that coarser hair, without the heavy residue that can clog pores around your mouth and jaw.

There is also the question of what a softener is really for. The thing that keeps a beard genuinely soft day to day is a daily oil, which conditions both the hair and the skin underneath. A weekly softening balm or conditioner is the extra step that tames a longer beard. Scalp conditioner does a bit of the first job and none of the second.

So: caught short, a little mild conditioner rinsed out well is fine. For your everyday routine, an oil plus a proper beard balm will give you a softer beard and happier skin for not much money. That is the honest answer.
